UPDATE: A second suspect was arrested at approximately 2:10 p.m.

In what has become an all-too-familiar scenario in recent months, a car with two suspected shoplifters aboard fled from Moraga police this afternoon and crashed in Orinda – with police taking one person into custody and searching for another (1:31 p.m.)

Glorietta Elementary School is under a “soft lockdown” as police search for one of two women who fled from the crash site into the nearby creek bed at Moraga Way and Glorietta.

The suspect is described as a black female, braids, all black clothing (wet – from running into the nearby creek bed).

Police are in the area with both air and ground assets. The outstanding suspect is not believed to be armed.

I’m glad they’re in custody. I’m tough on crime, but this seems a little overzealous for a shoplifting. Soft lockdown, police chase, air and ground assets, etc. Was it grand theft, or is Lamorinda police at their wits end with “all-too-familiar” scenarios? If so, I can’t say I blame them. Wow.

Just seems like overkill for shoplifting .
Am I missing something? Black female? Police chase in school area? Would this have happened if it was a white female? I read that there was erratic driving too. Hmmm. If i was being chased by police u would drive erratically too. What if a kid got mowed down? I am not in favor of crime, but the methods to catch criminals need to be examined in light of the offense. Have heard there is a lot of shoplifting in Rheem. Why dont stores hire more guards. and put internal and external cameras in place?

Unless you are trained law enforcement you have too many uneducated editorials.

If you’re referring to Tina’s comment, Ann, and we believe you are – it is just that: a post, a comment, an expression of a person’s belief, and is not to be conflated with an editorial, which would of course be an expression of opinion from the managers of this site.

Hope she at least gets a nice case of poison oak from running through the creek bed, because they won’t get meaningful legal punishment here in CA.

California voters passed Prop 47 which reduced the penalty for shoplifting to a misdemeanor punishable by a citation – hence the massive increase in shoplifting over the past few years.

I suppose that’s an effective outside of the box idea to improve crime statistics the progressive way.

They fled in a car and crashed. That is more than a shoplift.

Movie criminals are way better drivers and have way better rides. Plus they are usually HOT. I guess that has to be filed under Fiction.
