Man Shot, Killed In Dublin Sports Grounds Parking Lot Saturday; In-Laws Arrested

The 40-year-old engineering director for New York Times Games was shot and killed in the Dublin Sports Grounds parking lot in Dublin Saturday, police arresting the Dublin man’s in-laws after they were located in a car not far from the scene.

An officer driving near the scene of the shooting at 6700 Dublin Boulevard just before 3:10 p.m. Saturday noticed a man subsequently identified as Jonathan McKinsey down in the parking lot not far from where a white SUV had been parked with its rear hatch open.

The officer determined that McKinsey had been shot multiple times and called for backup as police received calls from bystanders reporting a shooting in the area. Police were told that two suspects had each fired on McKinsey as bystanders – many with children – sought cover.

Responding officers were directed to a dark sedan which had made its way away from the shooting scene and stopped the vehicle, taking two people subsequently identified as McKinsey’s in-laws – Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77 both of Dublin – into custody. Two pistols were located after a search of the suspects and their car.

Chen and Zhang were charged with murder and a lying-in-wait special circumstance, plus charges that each personally and intentionally fired at McKinsey. If convicted, they could face life in prison without parole.

Neither have entered a plea. Chen’s attorney said she plans to plead not guilty – indicating that her defense would focus on McKinsey’s alleged abuse of their daughter during a tumultuous and prolonged divorce proceeding that focused in a large part on the custody of the couple’s three children.

Court records indicated McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, were involved in a series of legal disputes in the year before his death, mostly over child custody issues.

McKinsey, formerly Dawn Finney, transitioned to male in 2010 and married Jang in Harris County, Texas, in 2011. Court filings reflect sharply differing accounts of their relationship – with both sides citing accounts of abuse by the other, something McKinsey said was exacerbated by his transition.

McKinsey alleged Jang tried to pull surgical tubing from his body following his operation and that her father punched him in the chest while he was in recovery. Jang has not been charged with any crime in connection with her husband’s murder.

Jang accused McKinsey of injuring her and abusing their children over the years, McKinsey subsequently pleading not guilty to two misdemeanor charges involving alleged child endangerment and corporal injury to a child.

The couple continued to litigate custody of their children up to the time McKinsey was murdered. McKinsey was apparently moving to secure more time with when he was killed just days away from a family court hearing called for that reason.

When did police stop releasing the names of homicide victims? I understand the investigative process but all we’ve seen is stay away from the sports fields and the police are working tirelessly to keep you safe. This isn’t cutting it.

And his in-laws hurled anti-transgender slurs at him as well. They were both abusive towards each other and each had a restraining order against the other. I feel sorry for the kids.

The senior citizens took turns shooting her (Dawn Finney) until their hearts content. Now they can die in peace. Who is the real biological father of the kids? FYI: Steroids affect your mental stability.

He was transgender and identified as a man. Let’s not add transphobia to this mess.
