One person died when a pickup truck struck a freeway exit sign on northbound Highway 680 at Highway 242 with such force early Saturday that witnesses reported an “explosion” in the area.

The Ford F150 struck the Willow Pass Road/Taylor Blvd. Next Exit sign, overturned and burned, according to witnesses. The driver was declared deceased at the scene.

Other motorists on the road at that hour reportedly stopped to assist but were driven back by flames.

The driver and sole occupant of the truck has not yet been identified pending notification of relatives.

CHP investigators said the Ford was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash. Any estimate of speed was not given.
