Detectives assigned to the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Golden Gate Division (GGD) are investigating the death of a Pittsburg teen whose body was located near eastbound SR-4 in Concord on Saturday.

Relatives of Damond Lazenby, Jr., 19, of Pittsburg found his body alongside the freeway while searching the area east of Port Chicago Highway shortly after 2 p.m. Lazenby was believed to have contacted his mother by phone from the area during a call on New Year’s Eve and his family reported him missing Jan. 1, 2023. His green Volkswagen was found abandoned near the overpass on Port Chicago Highway early that morning – its headlights on and engine running, a front tire flattened. Some of Lazenby’s clothes were found near the car.

Responding officers recovered Lazenby’s body and two lanes of SR-4 were closed to facilitate their investigation. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

The CHP announced it has assumed lead investigative responsibility in the case and will continue to work with the Concord Police Department.
