The man Danville police named as their suspect in the handgun murder of local businessman John H. Moore shot and critically wounded himself after police closed in on him at the end of an apparent cross-country run to his parents’ home in Saint Charles, Illinois.

Mark A. Sypien, 51, was declared dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head he fired after returning to his parents’ home, his silver Ford Escape quickly coming to the attention of a neighbor and local police.

Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain told reporters one of his deputies spotted the car in the driveway of the residence in Saint Charles and watched as Sypien, apparently aware that other deputies were on the way, stepped out of the Escape and fired a shot into his head, collapsing onto the lawn.

He was transported to a local hospital and died there, according to police. No other shots were fired during the standoff.

Court documents have indicated that Sypien once had a contentious relationship with Moore’s daughter and had repeatedly threatened the woman, the family, and Moore – demanding money Sypien felt he was owed over the years and promising revenge.

  1. I am thinking that shooting yourself in the head to effect a slow death with the attendant bright lights and futile intrusive procedures has to hurt a lot, but that will never offset the pain and grief his wanton violence caused others. Sad story.
