Firefighters battled a stubborn pier fire started when embers from a burning warehouse near the old Nantucket restaurant caught fire and burned Sunday night.

The warehouse collapsed in on itself about an hour after fire was reported in the structure at the venerable restaurant location, known for its seafood and sweeping views of the nearby Carquinez Bridge Sunday night.

The restaurant closed last year after nearly nine decades of business.

Firefighters called for assistance from two fire fireboats after fire carried by wind-borne embers spread to the nearby pier. That fire proved difficult to extinguish and burned long into the night before it could be brought under control.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately determined.
