2nd-Alarm Fire At Walnut Creek Safeway Friday; Store Evacuating

The Safeway store at 600 S. Broadway in Walnut Creek was evacuated Friday evening after a smoky fire broke out in a food preparation area, prompting firefighters to declare a second alarm shortly after the blaze was first reported at 8:15 p.m.

There were no reported injuries despite initial fears that someone may have sustained burns.

Firefighters were still on scene at 8:36 p.m. Police were called to assist with traffic control.
