A search for suspected car burglars touched off a high-speed pursuit on Highway 24 in Lafayette early Wednesday morning, multiple local agencies giving chase until the suspect vehicle crashed through a Concord intersection after turning its lights out.

Two men who exited the wreckage were eventually arrested after fleeing on foot – one sustaining a bite wound from a police canine. The pair were taken into custody in the 2700 block of Crescent Drive in Concord, their car ending up on the sidewalk after shearing off a traffic light and crosswalk sign.

Police had been looking for a grey sedan when a Lafayette police officer reportedly spotted the vehicle driving east on Highway 24 at around 1:55 a.m. and gave chase, the fleeing vehicle reaching speeds in excess of 100mph before crashing.

An 18-year-old Bay Point man was taken into custody and booked into Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of eluding police, receiving a stolen car, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest. His preliminary bail amount was set at $40,000.

A 19-year-old Antioch man was also taken into custody on similar charges, with his bail set at $90,000.

I like the way police dogs take a “bite out of crime’! Good work PDs! As members of the public, we are getting tired of criminals having the upper hand!
