An early-morning crash off northbound I680 at the SR242 split left a 9-year-old dead and four women seriously injured Sunday, the vehicle’s male driver fleeing the scene after the 5:14 a.m. crash.

Highway Patrol investigators said they were advised of the solo vehicle crash at that hour, arriving to find a gray Mazda CX-9 with 6 persons aboard overturned and the occupants ejected.

The vehicle was traveling northbound on I-680 when it left the roadway, traveled through the dirt median that separates the two freeways, and overturned multiple times, according to CHP investigators.

On-scene crews discovered a 9-year-old female passenger who had been ejected along with others and who was ultimately declared deceased. Four other women were transported to the hospital with major injuries.

Occupants of the car were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, according to the CHP. The driver, a Hispanic male adult approximately 30 years old, fled the scene on foot and at this time is still outstanding.

The CHP asked potential witnesses to contact CHP Contra Costa in Martinez, (925) 646-4980 or to email your contact information to 320Investigations@chp.ca.gov to be contacted by the investigating officer.
