An Oakley man was killed on Kirker Pass Road Monday after his vehicle was cut in two in a collision with a power pole, ejecting the driver.

The crash was reported at 3:39 p.m., near the intersection of Clearbrook Drive. Contra Costa County Coroner’s officials identified the driver as Joshua Butler, 30.

Multiple witnesses notified this site of the severity of the crash.

  1. A woman was killed in 2019 when she hit that same traffic pole. It’s a relatively new traffic pole, I thought breakaway poles were standard these days. The pole is a safety hazard and needs to be relocated or replaced or it will likely cause more fatalities in the future.

    • I don’t know what pole he hit, but if it was for the traffic signals I’ve never seen them as breakaway poles. I think they have to resist too much load in normal circumstances to be breakaway. On freeways regular light poles are typically breakaway unless they’re behind guardrail.
