A brazen thief stole a Ford Taurus from a home in the 3300 block of McGraw Lane in Lafayette Thursday morning, sprinting toward the Caldecott with Lamorinda police in pursuit.

At this hour (8:12 a.m.) we believe the thief may have been successful in his bid to make it though the tunnel despite police efforts to stop the vehicle as it sped west on Highway 24 at speeds estimated at 100 mph.

Officers responding to the initial call at approximately 7:55 a.m. spotted the car on Pleasant Hill Road, accelerating in an apparent bid to make the freeway and succeeding.

Lafayette and Orinda officers pursued the car through Lafayette and Orinda but terminated the chase as the car disappeared into the Caldecott at high speed.

(Police typically notify adjacent agencies of the approach of wanted vehicles after terminating their chases.)

We’ll have additional details when they are provided.

  1. They should have never built that tunnel!!!
At least that’s how I sometimes feel, as it seems all the criminal activity in Lamorinda area comes through it.
