Fire investigators are sifting through wreckage at the Rankin Aquatic Center, 100 Buckley Street, in Martinez Saturday after an early morning fire briefly trapped one person in an attic store room before it could be brought under control.

The unidentified victim was rescued by firefighters and airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Crews heard a person screaming for assistance shortly after their arrival on the scene at 7:40 a.m. and were able to extend a ladder to the roof of the center.

Rankin Center will be closed for the remainder of the day while the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, officials said.
