Four teens were arrested on carjacking charges following a high-speed chase down highways 242/680 Sunday – the four breaking and running from a reportedly carjacked vehicle after failing to make a turn and crashing into a tree at the Gregory Lane offramp.
The incident began to attract attention shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday when a vehicle reportedly carjacked in Antioch earlier in the day was spotted heading west on Highway 4.
Police officers slid in behind the vehicle when it accelerated to speeds topping 100 mph as it headed south on Highway 242 and 680, ultimately coming to a halt after the crash on the Gregory Lane offramp – the four men aboard the vehicle bailing out and running from officers on foot into the Courtyard Shopping Center.
Three of the teens attempted to hide in nearby businesses, police said. The driver was captured with the assistance of a Contra Costa County Sheriff Office K-9 as he fled along the rear of the shopping center and refused to stop after being given several commands. He suffered minor injuries from the apprehension.
None of the four were injured during the collision, according to police. No citizens or officers were injured during this incident. The suspects were all determined to be between 15 to 16 years of age.
