The past few months have been marked by a series of tragic incidents resulting in the deaths of highway patrol officers around the state and an incident Sunday morning conjured up fears of yet another collision brought first responders on the run.

Two officers were treated for minor injuries after their cruiser was rammed from behind by a 22-year-old Vacaville man they later arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

A CHP spokesman said the pair were southbound on Highway 680 near the Pacheco Boulevard interchange in unincorporated Contra Costa County when they were struck from behind at approximately 5 a.m.

Both vehicles pulled off the highway and everyone was assessed for injuries, according to the CHP. Both officers were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and were released later in the day.

The Vacaville driver was cooperative but was arrested for DUI. He was not injured in the crash, officers reported.
