Thursday evening at about 6:30pm, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a vehicle collision with a pedestrian struck while walking his dog in the area of Appian Way and Fran Way in El Sobrante.

First responders found an 81 year old El Sobrante man unresponsive at that location. He was transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland but did not survive his injuries, pronounced deceased at the hospital. The man’s dog, which was also struck and injured in the collision, was taken to a VCA animal clinic in El Sobrante by a good Samaritan and the dog is expected to survive.

Initial investigation determined that a 47-year-old male driver from El Sobrante driving a 1983 Mercedes was traveling southbound on Appian Way toward the crosswalk at Fran Way when, for reasons that are still under investigation, the driver drove into the crosswalk and struck the man and his dog.

Alcohol or drugs are not a factor in this collision but it is still under investigation and if anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.
