An 82-year-old Alamo man died after a crash on Danville Boulevard at Rudgear Road Thursday morning.

A spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said a Volkswagen sedan was located resting in a ditch just west of Danville Boulevard shortly after the crash was reported at 10:32 a.m.

First responders found the driver, later identified as Stanley Mehlhoff of Alamo, unresponsive behind the wheel of his car. He was pronounced deceased by emergency personnel a short time later.

A preliminary investigation has found that Mehlhoff was traveling westbound on Rudgear Road toward the intersection with Danville Blvd when for reasons that are still under investigation he drove through the intersection and off the roadway into the ditch. No other parties or vehicles were involved.

This collision is still under investigation and if anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.
