What did California look like before we changed it?

Join John Muir Land Trust and Rakestraw Books for an evening with scientist, artist, and historian Laura Cunningham, author of A State of Change: California’s Forgotten Landscapes. Cunningham will be in conversation with JMLT Executive Director Linus Eukel about California’s landscapes, how they have changed, and what we can learn from the past.

Cunningham’s book brings California’s historic landscapes to life, from oak woodlands filled with elk and grizzlies to coastal prairies shaped by Indigenous stewardship. The newly updated edition also looks ahead, exploring the return of wolves, regenerative agriculture, traditional fire practices, and how we might bring some of these landscapes back.

Reservations are required. Please call Rakestraw Books at (925) 837-7337 to reserve your spot.
