UPDATE 3:49 p.m. Tuesday: Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jimmy Lee has issued a statement affirming an official investigation into last night’s incident, categorizing that incident as a carjacking and asking for witnesses to contact law enforcement with any pertinent details.

Original Post: Police in Orinda are searching for two men who hijacked a vehicle from a woman on Moraga Way late Monday, threatening to kill the victim if she didn’t surrender her car after she had stopped to ask for directions.

An aggressive search for the two suspects, described as a black male and Hispanic male in their 30s, was mounted after the victim ran to a nearby gas station in the unit block of Moraga Way to report what had happened at approximately 11:25 p.m.

The victim reportedly told police the men demanded her vehicle and threatened to harm her. No weapons were believed seen. Both men were last seen heading east on Highway 24 in the victim’s hijacked car.

Police flooded the area, looking for her Hyundai Elantra, until receiving a report that a car matching that description had crashed near St. Stephens Drive. The focus of the police search shifted to that location, with a canine search team, police drone, and California Highway Patrol Helicopter joining the search.

As of this writing (8:40 a.m. Tuesday) it is not known if the suspects were located by police.

The victim of the carjacking was not believed to have been physically harmed.

I’m glad she’s okay, but this seems strange. A carjacking in Orinda isn’t strange – that could happen anywhere. But stopping and asking for directions, and the end result a carjacking and a death threat? Do they still have maps in gas station windows?

What’s a map? You mean Google Maps?

“after she had stopped to ask for directions”
How many times have I been asked to stop and ask for directions…by a woman? Inuuu…innuuu…innumerable times. Stubbornness carries the day. I know it’s not funny…but it’s kinda funny. And the story, as reported, might not hold up on a second telling. “They” hijacked the car and then “they” crashed it within a couple of miles and were never seen?…I’m all ears.
