A 37-year-old man police say was being sought for a shooting incident outside a Palo Alto Safeway store was arrested by police in Danville Wednesday evening.

The suspect, a Henderson, Nevada man whose name was not immediately given, was spotted driving a black pickup truck in the 500 block of Danville Boulevard at about 6:22 p.m. Wednesday. Danville officers pulled the truck over and detained the driver, who officers said proved to have an active warrant for his arrest.

Detectives from Palo Alto arrived to take the suspect into custody and reportedly located a weapon they believe was used in the shooting, according to information released by the Palo Alto Police Department.

Investigators said the shooting took place at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, with officers responding to multiple calls of gunshots near the Safeway at 2811 Middlefield Road. They observed a white Lexus SUV with paper license plates and what appeared to be a shattered window leaving the area, police said. Officers tried to stop the vehicle and, after it fled from the area, briefly pursued it before discontinuing the chase on U.S. Highway 101, where they lost sight of the car.

Palo Alto detectives obtained a warrant for the suspected gunman on Tuesday and began to actively search for him, according to Palo Alto police news release. The Nevada man was arrested for alleged assault with a deadly weapon involving a firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm and discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle, all felonies, according to the police.

Santa Clara County online inmate records indicate the 37-year-old man is being held at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Detectives are still hoping to locate the man targeted in the shooting so that they could determine if he was injured and to more fully understand the circumstances of the Safeway confrontation, according to the news release.

    • From what we can gather, George, he had “ties to the area.” We would presume that once the warrant was obtained PAlto PD notified the locals to be on the lookout and Danville PD acquired him as he rolled into town.
