  1. I remember a few years back when I stopped feeling safe in downtown Walnut Creek at night and hate to think I be feeling the same soon in downtown Lafayette. If there aren’t already there should be cameras at all freeway on ramps coming and going.

  2. You can thank proposition #47, which was deceitfully named the ‘safe neighborhood and schools act’ for letting all these criminals run loose. I’ll bet you anything, this guy was already on probation and/or has warrants on him. Ditto for the car load of robbers mentioned in the previous story.
    Remember this at election time.

  3. I still feel safe in downtown WC and Lamorinda at night, but I’m always aware of my surroundings. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on probation or parole, but black males with guns were a threat prior to Prop. 47. Are they coming through the tunnel more often, or are we reading about every single crime thanks to social media? I’m in favor of cameras everywhere. Cameras might not stop crime, but they help solve crimes.

  4. Danielle – why are Black males with guns a threat? I’ve never heard that one before. Are all races with guns a threat? Or just black?

  5. @Danielle: I love it when you speak your views so plainly. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on probation or parole, but black males with guns were a threat prior to Prop. 47.” Are black males the focus? Many others have guns. Watch the news. Dylann Roof, Las Vegas, Parkland, Sandy Hook, The Pulse, Orinda resturateur.
“Black male”…”armed with a black revolver” News24-680 reports. That’s gotta be triple deadly in the black of night! “I still feel safe in downtown WC and Lamorinda at night, but I’m always aware of my surroundings.”, Danielle posts.
Yeah, there are people like us on the street, and then there are other people. I have noticed that! And yet, amazingly, I, too, feel safe on the street in WC and Lovely Lamorinda, but apparently for different reasons.

Followed by the usual profiling from the usual contributors. Never mind the white guy with the gun who robbed the bank in Orinda. He’s just fallen on hard times…Poor guy!

    • @David – Of all the things we do here at Nuz24680 our use of racial description in the event of criminal – or reportedly criminal – incidents remains the most controversial. We are criticized for not using them when we don’t have them, or they are too “thin” to be of any public use, and we are criticized for using them – because we’ve stigmatized a race. It’s a NoWin situation, we know it, but we refuse to play. If we have a description of someone involved in a crime we feel it is incumbent on us to get that information before the public. And we will continue to do that, despite our belief that, yes, ALL races commit crimes, that sometimes people are wrongfully accused of those crimes, and that not everyone or every thing is as it first appears. Getting the truth can be messy. And the messenger needs thick skin.

  7. Brian and David – Because this guy happens to be black, and he used a gun. And black men commit a disproportion amount of violent crime. That’s a fact. I’m often mistaken for someone who tells it like it is. The truth hurts. Take your ultra liberal views elsewhere. Get a backbone – or don’t read my comments. They’re optional.

And speaking of reading my comments, I was harder on the white guy from Lafayette (WITH A GUN) than ANYONE.

I will continue to speak my views plainly, or however I want to speak them. Freedom of speech.

    • @Danielle – Nice, quiet Tuesday morning… plants straining for the sun, bikers out, then – Whammo – Hurricane Danielle rolls through the comment stream! Nice to see – and hear – from you but we would ask that you refrain from flinging personally directed barbs at others in the sandbox, we mean, the comment fields. Leaving it up out of respect for You, The First Amendment, and because the guys you’re talking with are grown men with backbones of their own and they can take it. But you know, nice and civil does it – and we know you know how to use your words!

  8. News24/680 – I don’t attack your readers first. I fire back when attacked. There’s a difference. And, yes, it’s usually men. I don’t take any crap from anyone. Sometimes I let it go, depending on the comment.

If you want me to be nice and civil towards your readers, maybe you should delete the comments that attack me – therefore not putting me in a position where I feel the need to defend myself.

    Have a nice day…

  9. @Danielle…I think you should reflect on how you could conclude that my views be taken elsewhere yet yours are welcome based on “Freedom of speech” as you call it (also, I was not expressing a “view” but asking a question).

@NEWS24-680…A description of a perp on the loose that includes skin color would seem to be required. However, concluding race from that skin color I find objectionable at times. For example, there have been times where a perp is described as Hispanic (I guess as a substitute for “brown”) when it has turned out they were not. And it cuts both ways of course.

    • @Brian – That sword cuts many ways, you’re right, and by nature of what we do we are often working with information gleaned after only a fleeting glance or impression of skin color. When we have a breaking news scenario and a robust description to work with, we’re going with that. Period. Until we know better. We think most folks realize it’s not possible to perform a DNA test and drill down into a person’s racial makeup on the spot. And we know mistakes will be made… it’s the nature of the beast. We remember talking with one of the SFPD officers who spoke with the man many believe was the Zodiac Killer, allowing him to go on his way because a mistaken description of a “Black Male” had gone out to patrol units. It haunted him and it haunts us… but it appears to be in the job description.
