San Ramon police are reportedly searching for a group of at least four young people who turned on a neighborhood man who objected to the noise they were making early Saturday morning.

Police found the victim, identified as Casey Pletz, dazed and bleeding from a head wound and other injuries, at his residence shortly after the incident was first reported at approximately 12:05 a.m. Saturday.

Neighbors report that Pletz attempted to confront a group of three young men and a woman who had been partying behind Walt Disney Elementary School, 3250 Pine Valley Rd., and who were walking down the path behind the school to a car described as a dark Nissan Pathfinder.

The nature of the conversation was not immediately known but the neighbor, whose name is being withheld at this time, was allegedly assaulted by one or more of the youths – suffering a fractured cheek bone, broken ribs, broken nose and a concussion.

Another neighbor reportedly intervened, stopping the beating. The Pathfinder was reportedly seen leaving the neighborhood at a high rate of speed.

Neighbors upset by the incident have reportedly posted a small reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects and a GoFundMe account has been set up to help defray the cost of Pletz’s medical expenses.

The case was reminiscent of the brutal assault on Pleasanton resident David Lamont – beaten outside his home after confronting a group of youths on Sept. 21, 2013. Lamont spent days in a coma and suffered lasting injuries as a result of the attack. No charges were ever brought against suspects in that case.

San Ramon Police Lt. Denton Carlson confirmed Monday that the case is under investigation by his department. We will update this story with new information when it is developed.

  1. We used to live in there. Sorry to hear about this and hope he recovers quickly. And the little jerks get the spanking they deserve.

  2. They are young and dumb, faster, stronger and trained in the best pools and on the best soccer fields — older guys don’t stand a chance when they’re in a pack.

  3. This is a pretty common scenario with kids partying in dark and what they think or out-of-the-way places. They don’t know the noise they make. Or who they’re pissing off. Someone knows who they are……

    • Morning, Bethany… some names were overheard that night, apparently, and we believe police are aware of that information…

  4. If our heroic neighbor hadn’t run outside at that moment, we all truly believe our neighbor/victim could’ve been killed. Our heroic neighbor that ran out shoved the main attacker off of the victim, who was laying there unconscious being kicked and getting his head stomped on. Partying at WD is very common, beating somebody this violently, while laying there not able to defend himself, is NOT a common occurance in San Ramon.

    • Thanks for writing, Pamela… we’re hearing similar comments from others offline. Injuries suffered that night are consistent with a beating delivered in the manner you describe. We’re pressing for additional info as we speak…

    • That would be up to the District Attorney to quantify and charge, Kate, though we have seen instances where a beating delivered by boots to a person on the ground was charged in that manner. We shall see on this one.
