Not So Fast, 24/680 People – Today Is Soup Day
We’ve been fasting. That means purposefully not eating – not churning out copy more speedily.
Right-thinking readers may see this and say: “Okay, but why?” and we get that, most folks don’t make a conscious decision to stop eating.
We do this for a number of reasons, chief among them we like to challenge ourselves sometimes. Raised on those old sea stories of open boat survival and marooned sailors forced to go without for days with nothing more than seawater and the occasional seagull, we always found ourselves wondering: could we do that?
Over the years we’ve determined that we could – along with other essentials like sleep and money – and that we could survive and come out feeling better for the experience. Life without food is not without its trials, however, during this last stretch we battled endless Youtube reels of Italian chefs and French bakers churning out heaping plate-fulls of Aglio, Olio e Peperoncino and counters full of Mille-feuille.
Watching stellar food production while fasting is akin to sleep deprivation (personal best: 7 days) and confinement in enclosed spaces (nope – we have to draw the line somewhere).
But, we’ve survived, feel cleansed and purified and ready for our End of Fast wind-down meal, a light broth preceded by a carefully prepared mirepoix that should hit our deadened palates like those Coca Cola inhalers prison guards used on recalcitrant inmates.
So we’re off to sharpen our knives and brunoise skills for a new beginning and ever-so-gradual return to the Land of Calories – using our new-found mental acuity to fend off haters and spammers and Know Nothings Who Feel Compelled to Pontificate On Our Profession (personal best: 37 HateRagers a month).
We feel re-energized and alive and ready to meet the week – which is shaping up nicely.
