The “Genie Out of the Bottle” issue of e-bike safety comes before the Danville Town Council tonight, driven in part by community members who say not enough has been done to address what is becoming a growing and largely uncontrolled problem.

Community members studying the issue submitted the results of a survey they say shows townspeople overwhelmingly in support of extending Danville’s existing downtown sidewalk e-bike prohibition to include residential sidewalks and Town-managed park paths.

Survey organizers maintain that of 676 responses, approximately 88% of those queried supported Town Council action to prohibit e-bikes, e-motos, electric scooters, and similar motorized devices from pedestrian-priority spaces.

“This is not about banning e-bikes,” the survey’s authors maintained. “It is about protecting children, seniors, families, dog walkers, runners, and pedestrians in the places where they should feel safe.”

The report recommends that the Danville Town Council extend the existing Downtown sidewalk e-bike prohibition to residential sidewalks and Town-managed park paths, further supported by clear signage, public education, parent notification, officer discretion, and meaningful enforcement.

The Danville Town Council meets today (201 Front Street – Town Hall) at 5pm to discuss the issue.
