A proposal to convert a former carpet store into an indoor shooting range complete with nine shooting lanes comes before the Walnut Creek Design Review Commission at their regularly scheduled meeting tonight, Wednesday.

No direct action is anticipated, with the commission expected to evaluate plans to convert the former Lewis & Lewis Carpets store into a 4,280 business with room for training, instruction, and firearms sales at the proposed location, 2615 N. Main Street.

Word of the project has – as might be expected – attracted both support and drawn fire from critics worried about noise and traffic generated by the business.

Also up for review are plans for an exterior remodel, landscaping, lighting and security – including a camera system and reinforced interior steel shutter. Commissioners will eventually make a recommendation to the Planning Commission.

ll consider the project’s California Environmental Quality Act determination, Conditional Use Permit, and final Design Review at a later date.

The meeting is scheduled for tonight, Wednesday, 6 p.m., in the Council Chamber, 1666 North Main Street with streaming available.
