Danville Lays Down The Law To E-Bike Speedsters
Tired of being buzzed, bowled-over and berated by at-times aggressive youths on speedy e-bikes Danville residents pressed town leaders to clamp down on the youthful riders.
The Town Council obliged by banning e-bikes, e-motorcycles and motorized scooters from being ridden within town parks (they’ll have to be walked by their riders) and by imposing a 15mph speed limit on e-riders on town-owned trails.
Those measures passed by unanimous vote Tuesday and, although we’ve yet to hear of reaction from the e-bike set, enforcement is expected to begin in early August.
Danville joins a growing list of Bay Area communities taking action against youthful riders who favor the speed and mobility of the vehicles – despite an accompanying sharp spike in injuries and even deaths related to their use.
While many in the council chambers agreed the ban was a major step forward, others expressed concern over exactly how the new ordinances would be enforced.

Tickets. Tickets. Tickets. Then fines for parents.
Good.
MTBs,, Skateboards and now E-Bikes. MTBs banned from some trails of Regional Parks. Skateboards banned from sidewalks. Now E-bikes have a common element. The Toxic Young Male. Too bad society has to deal with them. While we’re at it, ban Dog walkers. Talk about a threat to Public safety.
Ban dog walkers? Are you serious?
(We wondered if the doggos would have something to say about that one!)
Pleasant Hill neighborhoods have a real problem with this too. The kids riding them are too young and too inexperienced to be carrying that much speed.
This site accurately predicted the proliferation and use of these machines by young riders looking for fast and easy transportation not normally available to them. What I don’t think anyone fully understood was how these young riders would “pack up” and ride in such an aggressive fashion. It’s a shame because I would like to see this type of transportation available to those in need of it but as usual it only takes a few abusers to ruin it for everyone else.
