Letters: Forrest Gump Never Saw Anything Like This

LettersTypewriter

Editor;

News comes so quickly these days I barely have time to process developments. But during a moment of quiet contemplation away from the television I realized I’ve led an amazing life for someone who hasn’t seen their 40th birthday.

Not only have I seen a mob of my fellow citizens assault the U.S. Capitol and get away with it but today I witnessed the leader of the free world create a $1.7 billion slush fund to compensate them – with taxpayer money!

The move was so brazen, so out in the open I kept looking around for the neighborhood policeman to step in and say “Stop Thief!!!” That turned out to be wishful thinking as I learned that the Department of Justice was actually in on the theft.

What’s next? I have no idea but it’s pretty clear that we’ve crossed the Rubicon with uncertain times ahead.

Sincerely,

Ed Benning/Walnut Creek

    Good letter.

Not only did the J6 insurrectionists get pardoned, now they will get paid, a lot, and we will all pay for it. You can’t make this stuff up.

And speaking of blatant corruption, look at Trump’s stock trades. Most presidents put their finances in a blind trust managed by a neutral 3rd party so there’s no hint of corruption or conflict. If a Democrat president did this, Republican heads would explode, and this guy does it right in the open while making policy decisions and social media posts which influence the markets, it’s insider trading on steroids. He does it because he knows no one will do anything about it. What a country we live in right now. I’m disgusted.

Look up the Fund of German Trade and Industry and research what the Nazis did with it in 1933. You know what they say about not studying history. There’s a playbook out there this administration is using and it has all been done before.

    Dear News24-680:
Once again you feature a letter to the editor from someone who is surely an ultra left liberal. And of course those frustrated liberals who have been pushed out of power have a way to vent now. (Protesting every month that Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek is not enough for them I guess) I guess that’s good I know they are very frustrated.
Regarding the “J6 ” people…they did get punished quite a bit most spent months in solitary confinement. Something our government would not do the worst criminals! This is one reason they got paid so well because they were so unfairly treated .some just wandered into the capital with the crowd and we’re not guilty of violence. Everyone was just swept up in a net and assumed guilty. This would never been tolerated during any of the BLM protests or burnings or lootings. Actually in those no one was arrested for taken away or punished. I still don’t expect people that are so skewed towards the liberal left to ever try to understand how some of us other moderates see things.

If by “featuring” a letter to the editor you mean we published a letter to the editor. Guilty.

You may want to steel yourself, there are more on the way. People have a lot to say.

That you consider those opposed to insurrection against the govt “ultra left” ought to tell you something about who you consider moderate. Somebody check the Overton Window: it’s getting drafty.

Calling yourself a “moderate” while parroting demonstrably false talking points is almost performance art.

“No one was arrested” during the 2020 unrest is objectively false. Thousands were arrested nationwide. That’s not opinion it’s public record. So either you’re profoundly uninformed or knowingly dishonest. Neither is flattering.

And minimizing Jan. 6 as people “just wandering into the Capitol” while describing every other protest as lawless chaos isn’t moderation. It’s selective outrage.

Real moderates don’t need tribal buzzwords, victim cosplay, or revisionist history to make an argument.

I’m a real “moderate.” We don’t make political arguments because we don’t have an ideology. We leave that to the left and the right. We see both sides and we weigh accordingly. We’re far less engaged politically and it’s a comfortable ride. To be miserable 50% of the time because your party isn’t in office sounds like a terribly stressful way to live. And it’s demonstrated in the comments section. Have a nice day…

Respectfully, what makes you believe your process differs from citizens who fall to your perceived right or left? We all take in information and choose according to our lights.

    • John G on May 21, 2026 at 8:21 am

I don’t know anyone, incl myself, who spends time focused on a particular political ideology.

Most of us care about simple, basic things – like wanting competent, honest leaders who aren’t crooks, and someone who can accept losing an election with dignity and without attempts at political payback and retribution.

      Not too complicated, really.

“An ideology is a systematic body of concepts, beliefs, and values that shapes how individuals or groups perceive reality, interpret events, and make decisions. It provides a framework that guides behavior, organizes societies, and influences everything from politics and economics to culture and personal morals.

Quoting you, as a “moderate”: “we don’t have an ideology”. By itself, that is incomprehensible.
As posted previously, we all take in the information and make choices. If prejudice skews the information input, it is GIGO, garbage in, garbage out. In your “moderate” worldview, even the well-intentioned, oblivious, blissful non-ideologue is screwed because other malefactors are not so laissez faire. Have you noticed any brazen theft or violation of law lately that might be out of the ordinary in, you know, 250 years of American history? Others have. Moderates have. Conservatives have. Liberals have. People with all sorts of ideologies have noticed crimes.
