A car and driver witnesses described as “really moving” turned the intersection of N. Main Street and Parkside in Walnut Creek into a demolition derby and UFC cage fight Thursday but – miraculously – resulted in no major injuries.

The incident was first reported by Flashers and others in the area at 11:54 a.m. when a red car with Arizona plates traveling south on N. Main Street veered out of control, careened through the intersection, struck at least two other vehicles before launching off a landscaping berm and pancaking in the middle of a Chevron gas station undergoing renovation at 2329 N. Main Street.

Two people – one of them the driver of the involved car – were injured but apparently not so severely that the driver of the offending car wasn’t able to escape from paramedics with protective neck collar in place and engage police in a contentious struggle in the middle of the crash scene.

The unidentified driver was eventually restrained by several officers and handcuffed. What charges, if any, await him remain unknown for now. We believe he was taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary examination.

“I don’t know how fast he was going for sure but he was definitely moving,” reader Michael Hough told News24/680. “He glanced off a couple of cars on N. Main and set their airbags off before crashing into Chevron.”

Area businesses reported having captured events on their surveillance systems and offered video to police.
