Kreycik Search Winds Down; Officially Declared Missing Person Case

SHARE

The Pleasanton Police Department and its allied agencies have scaled back their search for Philip Kreycik, the 37-year-old Berkeley resident who failed to return from a planned run near Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park on Saturday.

After an exhaustive air and ground search boosted by the efforts of friends and fellow runners, no significant clues as to Kreycik’s whereabouts have been found. Investigators now believe that Kreycik, a PG&E energy analyst, is either incapacitated or somehow left the area.

Over the past four days, more than a dozen agencies and approximately 200 volunteers have retraced his planned route, finding his car, phone and wallet but no trace of the missing man. Today, Tuesday, searchers pushed 100 meters on either side of Kreycik’s intended route and into less accessible areas in hope of finding him or clues that might explain his disappearance.

“This was not an easy decision to make, and our focus is to continue supporting the Kreycik family,” said Lieutenant Erik Silacci, “We thank all of the search and rescue crews as well as the hundreds of volunteers who rallied together and remain committed to locating Philip.”

Anyone with pertinent information about this case is asked to contact the Pleasanton Police Department at (925) 931-5100.

  1. I thought it was odd that his wife called the police at 2:00 p.m. Sat afternoon reporting him missing. That’s kind of early. What if he had gone to lunch.

    • Our understanding is that the gentleman ran and worked according to a very strict schedule and that any tardiness could be cause for concern.

      • Correct. He told his wife & fellow runner(s) his planned run, AND he had a scheduled business meeting after the run.

He never made that meeting – possibly the trip wire.

    • I wonder why he wore the same running outfit on 7/10/21 that he wore for evening run with buddy on 7/9/21. I guess the T-shirt he wore for evening run was left in his car along with his iphone and his wallet. Did he stay at home the night of 7/9/21? Aside from the fact that dog(s) picked up some scent from his car to start of trail, it’s almost like his car was just left there and maybe he never went on the planned run? Was his car unlocked or locked when it was discovered at Moller Ranch Staging Parking spot? Police stated something like he told his wife around 11am that he would be gone for 45 minutes to one hour. I wonder if “gone” meant that he would be on a run or did he leave his home Saturday morning and tell his wife he would be gone for an hour?

        • First, we’ll say his friends/family are wise to keep the “chatter” down on social media and, yes, we were part of a search for a burglar who ran cross country from Pleasanton to Sunol in a relatively short time. He was finally apprehended while hiding under a bush on the railway cut. We’re hoping this morning’s occurrence is a lead BUT must counsel caution when it comes to voices in the night, etc.

    • Family support and huge community support. Those unable to handle the terrain staffed the volunteer center. Business community stepped up.

  2. With a park that has hundreds of visitors daily, no one is reporting they saw him. No sign of him in five days, despite exhaustive searches. Maybe he parked his car and took off. He wouldn’t be the first guy.

    • Yea but that implies someone picked him up or he had a car stashed there so he could split. Why? Why not just keep going if the idea was to pull a runner? Just doesnt seem likely.

        • LE has been really cautious with this and careful to remain sympathetic and on track but it’s their job to consider and investigate all the possibilities. They sort of dance up to the possibility that this is something other than a case of a missing husband without actually saying it. Hopefully there is a development that shines light on this soon.

        • Not really. The implication I derived is open ended – and my thought was that – scenario # 2 – he could have been kidnapped or such. There have been cases recently where violent criminals follow citizens home from retail stores and then are rob or carjack the targets.

Search dogs allegedly found his scent at the beginning of the trail. He could have gone back to his car and been abducted.

Yesterday there was a report a fellow runner saw Philip Saturday morning.

  3. Several years ago, a jogger (or walker) in Marin was murdered in cold blood by a group of three. He was the second victim; the same group also killed a woman in Golden Gate Park, whose body was dumped in the brush. In Marin, the murder occurred on a jogging trail. Anything is possible here. Dogs can usually pick up a scent, if there was a struggle, or bloodshed. Here, the dogs lost his scent on the trial. If he was kidnapped and walked away under coercion, there might not be much evidence. The same is true if he pulled a flyer. But it seems more likely than not that he is no longer in the park area.

  4. From the Editor/Moderator:
Folks, we appreciate your intense interest and participation in the search for Mr. Kreycik. We know many of you have theories as to the events surrounding his disappearance but we hasten to remind everyone that the friends and families of people we write about often come here and see what has been written about them.

We realize it is only natural to posit possible scenarios in cases such as this one but we would ask that you choose your words carefully should you choose to do so. Think of how they would sound if the person written about was your husband, wife or child. A little thought can convey meaning and spare someone additional heartache.

    Ed.

  5. Most of us have great friends. I think people are coming out of the woodwork – his friends, family and total strangers – because he has young kids. Most adults are parents, and the thought of these young kids without their dad is gut wrenching. If you’re watching the coverage, you’ve heard “I’m a father too.”
