Most southbound lanes of I680 south of the Stone Valley Road exit have been reopened at this hour (8:20 a.m.) after a multi-car crash claimed the life of a motorist shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday.

The CHP’s Contra Costa District spokesman said the crash occurred this morning at about 5:59 a.m., with officers advised of a collision involving a Big Rig at I-680 southbound, just south of Stone Valley Road. Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, the solo male driver of the Big Rig (64yr old male from Oakland) was found to have been ejected and was declared deceased at the scene.

Investigators believe the truck driver was attempting to avoid a non-injury collision in the roadway ahead of him, taking evasive action that caused his Freight-liner to crash.

The driver veered to the left in an attempt to avoid the previous crash, towards the concrete center divider, but subsequently crashed into the concrete barrier, according to the CHP. It appears that the driver was not wearing his seatbelt because he was ejected onto the roadway. Unfortunately the driver did not survive and was declared deceased at the scene. No other drivers were injured.

This incident is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez at (925) 646-4980.
