A man seen running across the northbound lanes of Interstate 680 near Treat Boulevard early Saturday morning was struck and killed by a passing vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The deceased was identified as Thomas Jancek, 52, of Walnut Creek. Investigators said Jancek died at 1 a.m. Saturday after he was hit by a tow truck.

The tow truck driver stopped after hitting Jancek and cooperated with the CHP, according to investigators, who said they have no idea what Jancek was doing on the freeway at that hour.

A man who apparently knew Jancek said in a comment posted to this site that the Walnut Creek man may have been distraught over the loss of the mother of his child in July, 2017.
