The wreckage of a small plane which crashed sometime after its takeoff from Hayward Executive Airport was located near Summit Road on Mt. Diablo, about two miles southwest of the mountain’s peak, on Saturday afternoon as family members reported the pilot overdue.

The body of the pilot was found with the wreckage of his single-engine Mooney M20 at about 2:30 p.m., officials said.

The Contra Costa County Coroner was called to the scene and representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration were en route to investigate the cause of the crash. The pilot was not identified, though officials said he had filed a flight plan indicating he was headed to Lincoln, in Placer County.

Residents in the area had reported low visibility on the mountain due to foggy conditions Friday evening though it was not known if that contributed to the crash.
