Police from multiple police agencies fell in behind a Honda Pilot stolen from a resident in the 4300 block of Conejo Drive in unincorporated Danville late Wednesday, pursuing the Honda and an associated car with two armed males aboard onto Highway 24 at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The two armed men entered the victim’s garage after he arrived home, according to release issued by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s office. One of the suspects stole some of the victim’s personal belongings and a black colored 2014 Honda Pilot SUV. The second suspect got into a white colored sedan with paper license plates and both sped away.

Police said the vehicles fled westbound onto Camino Tassajara and Sycamore Valley Road. Danville Police Officers spotted both vehicles as they approached Highway 680 and initiated pursuits of both vehicles. The pursuit went onto northbound 680 and westbound on Highway 24 before being terminated.

The Honda Pilot was later found abandoned in the city of Oakland in the area of Oakland Avenue and Pearl Street, according to investigators, and the suspects have not been located.

Their victim was not injured.

Deputies said their investigation is continuing. Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to contact the Office of the Sheriff at (925) 313-2600. For tips, email: tips@so.cccounty.us or call (866) 846-3592 to leave an anonymous voice message.

  1. Sorry to say that’s some uncharacteristically bad police work by police officers. Hope it doesn’t encourage more visitors

  2. The Tunnel seems like an excellent place to apprehend a stolen vehicle. It’s about a mile long with no where to turn. REALLY???? I guess they couldn’t reach any CHP or Berkeley PD or Oakland PD on the other side of the tunnel. Too Busy. They should be embarrassed.

    • Any LEO with firsthand insight into the matter is welcome to address this one, Steve. We do know that local law enforcement has been running in several different directions at high speed lately, a condition we are familiar with ourselves!

  3. I think we need to revisit the police chase policy. The bad guys know the police will stop chasing them if they just drive crazy enough, so they drive crazy for a short while-police stop chasing and the get away to repeat their crimes again.

I’m not in favor of putting lives at risk unnecessarily, but i don’t think this chase policy is working.

  4. The police will terminate a chase when they feel they’re putting “lives at risk unnecessarily,” and rightfully so. I’d rather someone get away than an innocent family of six killed. Stolen vehicles are easily recovered, but lives aren’t.

If you don’t get it, you’re not thinking very clearly.
