Martinez Repeat Burglar Busted For Lafayette Break-Ins – In Walnut Creek
The local landscape has been tinged by the hint of burglary lately, with high-profile cases mingling with lesser crimes – the culmination of a string of break-ins noted by Lafayette police Friday.
Police said they were able to identify a suspect in three previous residential burglaries in their city, their investigation taking them to a home in the 3800 block of Alhambra Way in Martinez on Tuesday to serve a search warrant in support of their case. Police said the object of their interest, subsequently identified as Kohlton Kumnick, 34, of Martinez, fled the scene after spotting officers.
A search of the area failed to turn up any sign of Kumnick, police reported, though property stolen in the Lafayette crimes was reportedly found in the home.
On Wednesday, Lafayette detectives and the Sheriff’s Office special enforcement unit J-Team took the suspect, who was driving a stolen vehicle, into custody in Walnut Creek.
Kumnick was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on burglary, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, felon in possession of a firearm, grand theft, identity theft, resisting arrest, and narcotic charges, according to police.
He is being held in lieu of $220,000 bail.

I actually feel sorry for this guy. Online it shows he has a kitchen remodeling business and a family. Must have been desperate. Not excusing it. But here I am going to be judgmental: he had a tattooed neck… something very common with prison inmates. Yeah I know we’re not supposed to judge by things like that but the way people present themselves often gives an indication. I’d be willing to try to help his family.

so the police have the time to announce their arrest of a serial burglar but not the fact that there is a serial burglar at work in the neighborhood?

Lamorinda does a great job of keeping their crime out of the headlines, it’s bad for property values. I had a *very* close call when a carful of Eastern European guys tried to rob me of a large amount of cash, which I was transporting from the BofA in downtown Lafayette, to our office safe, on a Saturday afternoon; broad daylight, as they say. ‘Jugging’, they called it, where a lookout, often female, maybe with a baby too, shops or dines in one of the businesses in the Safeway shopping center. Once they identify a target a crew will pursue the victim, then use a special tool or device to puncture a tire, or follow them home, and do some crime. The Lafayette cops were awesome in my case, and are doing their best to catch these crews, but told me that it’s happening constantly – stay vigilant and stay armed, they told me. Sucks to hear that this deal was a Mtz neighbor, especially a fellow Tradesman. Hard times these days, hope he gets sorted and makes amends
Hey, MG, yes… well aware of the jugging thing – Texas origin with an invasive spread to the rest of the West. We’re hoping those involved, victims, police, etc. would tell us when incidents of this type happen but that may be too much for us to wish for as a lot of what we’re hearing about appears to be swept under the ever-convenient rug.
So much for the Caldecott crime commuters. These guys live with us.
