One person was killed and another severely injured when their vehicle struck the center divide of northbound I680 south of Marina Vista and overturned Monday morning.

The single-vehicle crash, reported at approximately 10:33 a.m., triggered a SigAlert for the highway and reduced northbound traffic to a single lane while California Highway Patrol investigators searched for clues to the crash, just south of Marina Vista in the township of Vine Hill.

Officers determined that a white Dodge Caravan occupied by one male adult and one female adult was traveling north on I680 when, for reasons still under investigation, the Dodge veered off the right shoulder, returned to the road, crashed into the concrete center divider, and overturned.

A female occupant subsequently identified as 25-year-old Shelby Sherman of Martinez was ejected during the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other occupant involved sustained major injuries and was transported to the hospital. During the investigation it was determined neither occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

It is still under investigation who was driving at the time of the crash and whether DUI was a factor, according to the CHP.
