A fast-moving fire preceded by a “boom” reported by neighbors swept through the backyard and an aviary in the backyard of a home in the 1100 block of Hidalgo Court in Lafayette Sunday night.

The fire was first reported just before 8 p.m., with neighbors contacting this site saying they heard a muffled explosion prior to seeing flames climbing into the trees.

Residents of an affected home were evacuated safely by police and fire personnel but the fire burned through outbuildings behind the residence – reportedly claiming the lives of several birds  housed in an aviary there.

Neighbors reported that the resident was a successful pigeon breeder and judge.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
