Lafayette Carjacking Results In Chase, Arrests Sunday
Three men attacked a driver in her car at the Olympic Boulevard Staging Area near Olympic Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road at approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday, smashing the owner’s window and making off with her 2019 Hyundai Elantra.
Lafayette police officers quickly acquired a visual of the carjacked vehicle and kept it in sight during a chase through Lafayette and onto Highway 24 west. The vehicle was described as a white 2019 Hyundai Elantra.
UPDATE: 3:50 pm – The vehicle made it through the Caldecott at 115mph and is currently running on surface streets in Oakland.
UPDATE: 4:02pm – At least two of the three suspects aboard the Elantra bailed out of the car and fled into the Peralta Hacienda neighborhood of Oakland, where they were believed to have been taken into custody. Unsure which agency made the arrest.
UPDATE: 10:35 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13 – East Bay Regional Park District Police Lt. Terrence Cotcher confirmed that the incident occurred, that a replica firearm was recovered, and that the victim in this case was not physically harmed. He said a multi-agency investigation into the incident is ongoing, with no additional information immediately forthcoming.

Hoping someone on here with LEO knowledge may know the answer to this: do local police forces, EBRP, Bart police etc each have their own policies/practices on when to abandon a high speed pursuit due to danger involved? I believe there’s something like this for CHP.
Isn’t it speed and evasive action taken vs the type of crime?
….. and traffic, road conditions. I’d be interested in known too.
The answer is probably. Each department may set it’s own policy, for San Mateo Co SO, no pursuits over 80 unless a violent felony has occurred.

All agencies have their own policies. The agencies I worked for did not have a specific speed rule per say. When initiating a pursuit crime(reason for pursuit), speeds, time of day/road & traffic conditions are all taken into account. A supervisor monitors and it can be called off by either the officer involved or the supervisor.
Most local departments will hand it off to CHP once it leaves surface streets.
