We’ve noted a recent flurry of armed robberies within our area of coverage and, it appears, local law enforcement was busy tracking a crew of suspected thieves believed responsible for as many as 25 robberies throughout the area.

According to a release offered by police in Antioch, officers began looking for a crew of masked Hispanic males in their late teens or early twenties who allegedly embarked on a flurry of armed crimes in August. Investigators eventually determined that robberies in Antioch, Pittsburg, Concord, Brentwood, Bay Point, and Clayton were related, and viable leads were established to identify the responsible parties.

On November 3rd, 2021, an armed robbery occurred in the city of Concord. Investigators from the Concord Police Department notified the other involved agencies, and the suspect vehicle was located and stopped in Bay Point, according to police. All three occupants were residents of Pittsburg and were suspected of being responsible for the series of robberies in Contra Costa County. Evidence of the robbery(s) was located inside the vehicle, and all three suspects were taken into custody.

Investigators from Pittsburg, Antioch, and Concord served several residential search warrants in the city of Pittsburg as a result, police said, and during the searches evidence linking the suspects to the robberies was located.

On Friday, November 5 the cases were presented to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney’s Office reviewed the cases and filed felony charges with enhancements, on 18-year-old Samuel Banales-Melena, 20-year-old Jonathan Medina-Flores, and 18-year-old Rogelio Medina-Flores for their participation in the robberies.

  1. Kudos to the police. Great job. When these thugs are convicted I hop the judgey throws the book at them.

    • Oh, Becton may prosecute, but they will get three years and be out in two. Saw something similar when I was in court last week. 108RS

      • Why would they get more than three years? A disgraced police officer/firefighter only got 7 years, serving just 5, for murdering two people. With that baseline, 3 sounds about, right.

        • Umm, twenty five (25) armed robberies? How many violent / aggravated felonies did they commit? Will they automatically earn Three Strikes?

Knowing our lax state, they will serve their sentences concurrently. I hope not.

  2. Two appear to be brothers. Still no arrests re the Spoontonic or Main Street shootings in Walnut Creek.

  3. Lucky nobody got hurt, or they would be facing even greater charges. Sad these young men threw away their lives on such violent, negative actions. Prison is horrible and they will might learn something, probably not. Many go on to commit more crimes and never recover. Where are their parents?
