A 56-year-old San Ramon man has been booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after allegedly striking a bicyclist with his car and leaving the scene Monday night.
The incident occurred on Tassajara Road and Palisades in Dublin at around 7 p.m., officers tending to a seriously injured bicyclist they located at the scene and initiating a search for a white BMW witnesses said left the area after the crash.
San Ramon police later located the car in the Safeway shopping center parking lot on Bollinger Canyon Road and took its driver into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run. The unidentified driver was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. The bicyclist, also unidentified, is reportedly in stable condition and expected to recover from his injuries at a local hospital.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Monday’s collision is the latest incident involving a car and cyclist to occur in the Valley.
Greg Knapp, a local resident and NFL quarterback coach, died on July 22 of injuries incurred after he was struck while on a weekend bicycle ride in San Ramon.
Knapp was riding with traffic on Dougherty Road north of Monarch Road when a vehicle reportedly struck him, knocking the cyclist to the ground. Witnesses said Knapp, 58, appeared to have suffered head trauma in the collision.
The driver of the vehicle, an unidentified 22-year-old Danville man, remained on the scene and cooperated with police. Neither drugs or alcohol are believed to have played a role in the collision.

If only all cyclists shared your logic. The vehicle will always win.
The car will always win – in a collision verses a bike. But bikes are going to outlive fossil fuel burning cars.
This isn’t about fossil fuel. This is about life and death. Cyclists fight for their rights when they should be focused on life expectancy.
@Keith…perhaps drivers need to value human life a little more and slow down and stay off their phones then…seems reasonable to me
I focus on my life expectancy every time I go for a ride. My nightmare is getting dragged under the wheels of a SUV driven by a 18yo on their cellphone.
“always assume drivers are deaf, blind and/or out of their minds”…doubly true when you’re riding a bike, a motorcycle or walking sans sidewalk
