Man Shot By Danville Police Officer Dies In Hospital

SHARE

Tyrell Wilson, the 32-year-old man wounded by a Danville police officer in last Thursday’s shooting at Sycamore Valley Road and Camino Ramon, has died of that wound in a local hospital.

Wilson, a transient police said frequented the park-n-ride lot in Danville prior to his fatal confrontation with Officer Andrew Hall on March 11, died at an unspecified date and time.

The fatal encounter unfolded after motorists called to say that Wilson was the man they saw throwing rocks onto Interstate 680, Officer Hall responding to the call, drawing his weapon and firing a single shot after Wilson opened a folding knife and advanced toward him.

Hall was the same officer who shot and killed a Newark man after a slow-speed chase through town in 2018, firing shots into a car driven by 33-year-old Laudemer Arboleda, one round striking Arboleda in the chest.

Anyone with any information on the latest incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division at (925) 313-2600 or through Sheriff’s Office dispatch at (925) 646-2441. 1. I’m just wondering if this would have been handled any differently by the mental health crisis teams they want to set up.

    • Possibly, if they can deal with a man wielding a knife at them…or I guess they could call the police then. Oh, wait……

  2. No easy answers and a big big problem. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there just like Tyrell Wilson. Could it have ended differently? Not with the way things are done now I guess.

  3. Its interesting how the following information was not included above … “The officer ordered Wilson to drop the knife several times then Wilson advanced toward him”

    • Well, that’s the question isn’t it? Does counseling work any better the second time you kill a mentally ill person in the streets of Danville? It’s just bad luck, I guess??? 2 killings in the last 20 years? Both by Officer Hall.

  4. The site’s description of events has evolved. Now it states that Wilson (not just someone) was SPECIFICALLY identified by motorists as the man throwing rocks. When did that change? Also, you continue to relate the uncorroborated police version of events until there is no other version possible now that Wilson is dead. Wilson opened a knife when confronted by officer Hall. Was he an imminent threat or just another confused, mentally unstable denizen of Danville? Beyond the still photo we know nothing. Nothing else has been established by video or witness testimony. Yet you keep repeating the police version. Finally, Arboleda was shot by Hall once in the chest…and he had 8 other gunshot wounds. I guess 1 shot sounds less like an execution. Maybe that’s why it is often stated that way.

    • Wilson was a “transient”, not rich, not famous. So, you’ll notice this reporting dispenses with any of the usual “allegedly” qualifiers; it dispenses with any qualifier such as: “as reported by police”. No, this is reported as gospel. The man “advanced” upon the police officer because that is what is in the police report. Just show us the video.

    • Agreed. Shootings of any type are extremely rare in Danville yet we managed to have two fatal incidents in eighteen months – both involving the same officer. Those odds seem pretty extreme or am I wrong? I suppose you could argue that with a small force serving a large community it is possible that one officer would find himself forced to fire his weapon in that time period but I don’t know I’m not a mathematician.

    • @David- not sure why this site has added or changed the description of events. The question is have the police released more then one press release, if they have not then…not the first time media either on purpose or accidentally ignores facts or leaves out details. Thankfully the courts don’t use media reports. Not great though when members of the public have questions.

And I agree with you that in this particular incident there doesn’t seem to be a reason why the department is not more fourth coming in releasing the body cam video or at least making a statement on where they are in their investigation and when more information may be released. I don’t believe police departments in Contra Costa County investigate their own officer involved shootings. I believe it’s the DA’s Office so maybe that may be why there is a delay in additional info.

  5. This officer is willing to defend the public against violent criminals, that part is clear. Are there better options than having to use violence against violent criminals? To intervene before someone with mental or drug induced violence acts out? Believe so. But it’s the height of ignorance & hubris to believe you would be smarter, braver & more compassionate when facing a violent criminal that could end your life in an instant.

  6. Sorry to hear this. It is hard for all.
The only person who can find a bright lining in this will be race attorney John Burris who will certainly enter the case with a multi-million dollar lawsuit if the transient man was POC. (person of color)
(Hidden under a hoodie, wielding a knife, it would be hard to tell but it will certainly matter after the fact now )
