Officials at Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek placed the school in lockdown mode Thursday after receiving a tip about a student with a gun on campus.

In notes and texts from students and parents, the school was placed in lockdown at about 11:20 a.m. after receiving a report that a student with a concealed handgun was on campus.

The school’s resource officer, who was on campus, quickly located and detained the student, according to the Walnut Creek police. The student’s backpack was searched and a loaded handgun was located inside.

The unnamed student was arrested for being in possession of a loaded firearm and transported to the police department. The student’s name will not be released due to the student’s age. The investigation is still active and no additional information is available at this time, police said.

School officials said that a weapon was confiscated and the student in custody of Walnut Creek police, who turned out to the campus in significant number.

A recent note from school staff said the campus is “safe at this time” (12:10 p.m.) and stated that “appropriate police and disciplinary action will follow” in regard to the student.

Police are maintaining a watchful presence on campus and will remain throughout the day, officials said.

  1. Poor reporting – “School officials have said that a weapon was confiscated and the student in custody of Walnut Creek police, who turned out to the campus in significant number.”
What does this even mean? Do you not proofread at all?!
    Glad that everyone is safe.

  2. Apropos “the student…who turned out in significant number”, the story doesn’t say if he was a good guy with a gun or a bad guy with a gun which kinda leaves “appropriate police and disciplinary action will follow” to the imagination. English is hard.
