Divers on Wednesday recovered the second of two men who drowned in the serene but deep waters of Lake Del Valle outside of Livermore this week – both men not wearing life preservers when they slipped below the surface.

Authorities believe a body recovered Wednesday is that of a 23-year-old man who fell off a boat during an excursion with friends the day before. Investigators said the victim, who friends said was a Bay Area jockey, fell into the lake while the pilot of the boat was making a turn. The victim, who friends and family said was not a strong swimmer, failed to resurface.

On Saturday, a man in his 30s also went into the water in the general vicinity of Tuesday’s incident and drowned, East Bay Regional Park District officers said, calling the deaths “tragic and uncommon.”

Foul play was not believed to be a factor in either case. Park officials said the men were two of thousands of people who ventured to local parks and lakes in recent days seeking relief from an ongoing heat wave.
