In keeping with our practice of informing our readership about incidents of note occurring in our neighborhoods we can shed some light on what several readers described as traffic gridlock and “heavy police activity” near the Caldecott Tunnel at around 3 p.m. Saturday.
It turns out that Antioch police located a stolen car in the parking lot of Sycamore Square, located in the 1000 block of Sycamore Drive in their city, with police attempting to detain the driver at the scene.
According to police, the 27-year-old Oakland man police believed was operating the vehicle, managed to re-enter the car and began to fight with officers attempting to take him into custody.
Police said officers used their cars to block the suspect’s car but that he began to ram them, with one officer struck by the car and another reported dragged for a time as it attempted to flee – with still another officer pinned between the stolen car and a police cruiser.
Police said the suspect fled onto the freeway and eventually entered westbound Highway 24. California Highway Patrol officers took over the pursuit with the assistance of Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Helicopter Star 3. According to officers, the suspect entered the Caldecott Tunnel
westbound and collided with two uninvolved vehicles before fleeing on foot through the tunnel, breaking free from a CHP officer attempting to arrest him and fleeing into the surrounding area.
With the sheriff’s helicopter overhead, police were able to track the suspect to a heavily wooded area near Tunnel Road and were able to take him into custody there. A loaded firearm was allegedly located in the suspect’s discarded clothing, along with a large amount of narcotics for sale in his vehicle.
The unidentified suspect was eventually booked into the Contra Costa County Detention Facility in Martinez on a variety of felony charges. No civilians were injured during the collisions.
He should’ve just shot himself in the head and saved taxpayers a small fortune. Am I bitter much, YES!
We were several cars behind this. Got caught inthe jammup but didn’t see the getaway car. Traffic is getting crazy and crazier around here thought!

He re-entered the car and fought with officers in Antioch? Considering the mayhem that followed, those police incident reports regarding the initial confrontation are going to be very interesting. Will the video evidence of what transpired ever be released to the public?
Not unless someone files a PRA
He could’ve killed someone. If he fought the police, he’s lucky he didn’t get shot.
