A local motorist is undergoing for a possible broken leg this morning after a grinding crash on Highway 24 at Pleasant Hill Road Sunday night scattered car parts across much of the freeway and prompted the California Highway Patrol to close much of the freeway until debris could be removed.

Officer Nathan Johnson said the crash – viewed by many, apparently, as this site’s email and phone lines lit up shortly after – occurred at 9:10 p.m. as the driver lost control of his vehicle and made contact with the center divider.

Passersby reported the driver was knocked unconscious by the impact and help was summoned but Johnson said at that point the car was struck by a second vehicle, further adding to the debris field and spreading from Pleasant Hill to the Central Lafayette offramp.

CHP officers were able to re-direct motorists around the crash site, Johnson said, through use of a navigable slow lane and adjacent offramp but the amount of debris and scope of the cleanup effort tied up westbound traffic for about half an hour with officers opening lanes as they cleared them.
