A driver hauling a load of mail for the U.S. Postal Service was killed early Monday morning when the box truck he was driving flipped on its side south of El Pintado Road in Danville.

California Highway Patrol investigators said the crash occurred at 3:24 a.m., when the southbound truck veered to the right shoulder of I-680 at El Pintado Road, struck an abandoned Ford minivan, overturned and struck a large metal pole.

The crash left the truck driver, later identified 26-year-old Ravikesh Kumar of Sacramento, trapped inside the cab and his load spilled out into the roadway.

The driver was transported to a local hospital in Walnut Creek but died of his injuries.

Investigators said preliminary indications are that the driver allowed the truck to veer to the right and collide with the abandoned minivan park within the right shoulder. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision.

Readers in the area have been reporting heavy congestion on local surface streets as motorists attempt to skirt the crash scene.
