    MuseumSRV will be hosting this free virtual program on Thursday May 16 at 11:30. American Icon: The Golden Gate Bridge” People called it “The Bridge That Couldn’t Be Built.” When first proposed in the 1910s, no suspension bridge had ever been built over such a distance or in such daunting open-ocean conditions. Spanning the famed mile-wide entrance to San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge was both a milestone of engineering and a monumental example of Art Deco architecture when completed in 1937. 

    In this talk, historian John Martini will discuss the origins, design concerns, controversies, construction, and operational history of San Francisco’s most famous landmark. Learn about Bridge’s on-going maintenance challenges and upgrades, including a controversial suicide barrier, and its evolution into a world-wide symbol of San Francisco and California.
