Rotten Eggs? Sulphur? Methane? Residents Ask: “What’s That Smell?”
Well, no, it’s not as bad as it must have been living next to those steel and pulp mills back in the Way Back When but, whew, the locals are barking about a complex mix of aromas wafting through the 24/680 in recent days and we’ll confess – we don’t know what it is, though we’ve expounded on our suspicions.
No one else appears to know what it is, either, but that hasn’t stopped the Flash inquiries and “Where the hell is that smell coming from? posts of late.
For the record, we’re going with: Leaves, debris, and other detritus dumped into our culverts and sewers, dampened by recent rains and moldering into methane…

There’s apparently a sulfur spring somewhere near John Muir Hospital. A possible source for that area, anyway.
It’s kind of strange, neither organic or chemical. It seems to drift on the wind. I’d be interested in knowing the origin, if and when determined.
It’s hydrogen sulfide gas coming from a natural spring on the church property across from John Muir medical center. It’s coming up through underground cracks. We seem to go through this every couple of years.
I’m vaguely remembering a similiar situation a few years back.. and if i recall correctly the strong odor wafted over from the dump in Pittsburgh .
Really? You mean our Pittsburg and not the other one, right… ’cause that would be a bit of a stretch. But if borne out that would be a new contender in the “explanations” race.

So there’s some gas pockets bubbling up under Walnut Creek?
Yes. This has been ongoing for the past few weeks. We have seen fire department and other persons checking out sewers and other areas in the neighborhood late at night. Its very odd and the odor seems to be traveling.
I am in Orinda I called PG&E they had people out all over trying to triangulate something in the sewers it was not gas
Natural gas leak or sewer gas.
Gas is gas or as they used to say in the 1984 Wendy’s commercial in reference to chicken ingredient parts, “parts is parts”
