Families of crime victims who say their needs were not met by Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton have served the prosecutor with a Notice of Intent demanding her recall.

Becton becomes the latest in a string of recall drives aimed at Bay Area prosecutors – a trend which started when Chesa Boudin was unseated in San Francisco and followed by Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price’s removal in November 2024.

Relatives of crime victims opposed to Becton posted a video of a woman serving the prosecutor with a Notice of Intent as she arrived at her office in Martinez Tuesday. The video was uploaded to a website built for and recently posted by the people behind the recall effort – who are slowly making themselves known.

Although a precedent has been established for successful recall efforts, court watchers have noted that the “Notice of Intent” filing required only 100 verified signatures of Contra Costa County voters. Getting the recall on the ballot, they say, will require signatures from 10 percent of registered voters county—wide, about 70,000 signatures.

Becton has yet to comment on the effort against her.

The initial group of recall supporters includes relatives of Allie Sweitzer, shot and killed by two people in 2017. Sweitzer’s mother maintains that Becton failed to support their effort to secure more prison time for her killers.

Relatives of Alexis Gabe, killed by her ex-boyfriend in 2022, are also involved in the recall effort – her father upset that Becton’s office did not aggressively pursue charges against a relative of Gabe’s killer they believe hid evidence of importance to the case.

  1. This is fascinating and certainly bears watching and possibly endorsing. These are actual family and friends of victims who are speaking out. I applaud their resolve.
