UPDATED: Monday, Dec. 30 3:50pm

A 15-year-old boy was killed in a pre-dawn crash at Newell Avenue and S. California Boulevard in Walnut Creek early Sunday, the boy’s 17-year-old cousin reportedly staying behind to give an account to police while three other occupants of the car ran from the scene.

The victim, identified as Gerardo Rosales-Murillo, a Honduran national reportedly staying with relatives in San Jose, was declared deceased at a local hospital after the crash, reported at 2:36a.m. as a “car into a pillar.”

The boy’s unidentified 17-year-old cousin, in the car at the time of the crash, stayed behind and spoke with law enforcement who arrived and rendered life-saving measures. The heavily damaged car the group was in was believed to have been stolen in San Jose.

Walnut Creek police said on Monday that they subsequently arrested a 16-year-old male believed to be the driver in San Jose, charging him with vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run. The juvenile’s name was not released.

Walnut Creek police closed off the crash site for several hours Sunday in order to facilitate their investigation. As of Monday, there was no official word on events leading up to the crash.

  1. We are in the state of emergency..car thief’s smash n grab … this is unbelievable we obviously need more then the police sheriff dept if they are short staff…

    • Car theft is out of control! In Oakland alone, last year 15,000 cars were stolen. Many are then used to smash into a business for robbery, or destroyed during a night time ‘sideshows’, or driven recklessly and crashed, or totally stripped. My insurance agent said this is why my auto insurance was not renewed- despite a perfect record- when I start working in Oakland. And believe it or not you got some state legislators in Sacramento that wanted to decriminalize the first car theft did a criminal does. I hope we start coming to our senses!

      • These were children and one died. That is sad. We can take a moment from beating the usual drum.

I do wonder though how a teenage auto theft/joyride in the south bay winds up in Walnut Creek.

  2. @Wuddo – too many years of little to no punishment and continual 2nd chances for those that choose a life of crime. Gonna take time to slow it down and good luck with getting more funds for police let alone finding qualified candidates that want the job.

  3. We are suffering from this generation not receiving consequences for their behavior. Wr are the laughing stock of our country.

  4. I’ll ask since no one else has – what is a carload of teenagers doing out at 3 in the morning? I’d guess nightclubbing but who’d serve them?
