A crew of sledgehammer-wielding thieves raided the Danville Home Consignment store at 1901 Camino Ramon on Wednesday, smashing jewelry cases as employees fled outdoors.

As many as five thieves, all masked and hooded, were believed to have escaped in a waiting car.

The robbery took place around 3 p.m. There were no reported injuries and the dollar amount of merchandise lost was not immediately known, though a similar raid last year proved lucrative for the thieves.

    • Robberies like this happen so fast, the employees and shoppers in the store were probably stunned, and not trained observers. It will take a while for the police to access any surveillance cameras for images, and the news reporting came out before such information was available. Not everything is instantaneous, despite your assumptions!

      • Thanks, C… yes. Everything you said is on the money. One additional component of the description thing: there is a segment out there, sad but true, that likes to spin a racist slant out of suspect descriptions. People who read us know that we routinely include descriptions by race in order to assist in the location, identification of suspects. But we are loathe to fan the flames of a racial trope and will refrain from their use if they are so broad/thin as to be of no use. Thanks for reading and writing…

      • Masks and hoodies make descriptions somewhat difficult or impossible. Ethnicity could include/exclude persons when there is nothing else to go on. Any descriptions about the thieves could be useful.

  2. So what happens if you had your jewelry there for consignment? Is it covered by their insurance, or are you out of luck?
