Defrocked priest Stephen Miller Kiesle was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol, and special allegations for prior felonies Wednesday in connection with the April 16 death of fellow Rossmoor resident Curtis Gunn, 64.

Kiesle is being held in the Martinez Detention Facility on $600,000 bail.

Investigators say Kiesle, 75, was driving in Rossmoor when he struck Gunn and his wife Laurelyn on a sidewalk. The couple were returning to their home after an event at the retirement community when they were hit from behind on Tice Creek Drive near Fairlawn Court around 9:15 p.m.

Gunn suffered mortal injuries and was later pronounced dead later at John Muir Medical Center. Laurelyn was treated for minor injuries, as was Kiesle.

Kiesle will be arraigned April 21, at 1:35 pm in Martinez.
